Default 2016 Factory Backup Camera on demand using a switch

Hi Folks,

I am looking to be able to control my factory backup camera via a double throw switch. I understand that this may be possible by identifying the correct wires and adding 12v on demand to the correct wire.

I have searched the forums and a few corners of the web to figure out how to accomplish this on my 302a Non-Nav 2016. There is a great thread for older vehicles but other than suggesting LockPick, there seems to be little out there for 2015, 2016, etc.

If I have missed a thread that outlines this process for late model trucks--very sorry! Otherwise, please help me out, I am sure some other folks would like to do the same too

Thanks!

This is best accomplished peering over the wiring diagrams in the online workshop manual. I am convinced that anything is possible on these trucks, but you have to be willing to map stuff out like this for yourself. Get far enough, others will join in. Do this a few times and you will be a pioneer...with respect to doing stuff like this. Wish I had more time...I would delve into this....What you describe is exactly how it works in my wife's Audi Q7. There is a parking sensor button on the dash that when pushed activates the rear camera....kinda cool.

try putting 12v to pin 2, i think thats what the bcm does with "ctrl mod" circuits?

or

check the add 360 camera to xlt thread, won't be a simple switch or exactly cheap but they have a rostra module that can activate the camera anytime

My guess is you will need something in between the CAN messages that would block the speed and would tell the apim that the truck is in reverse. Example cut the hs can feed. Then route the can to say a can shield on an adruino and process the can messages then tie the hs can back to the apim. This is theoretical. I have not tried it yet

Somehow, I dont think I would apply 12v to the LIN bus. Usually it is stepped down from 12V as it is with the ambient lighting LIN. If you apply 12V you may burn up the LIN bus communication circuit. I could be wrong, but I would look closely at the ground. I think the rear camera is a switch 12V- and if it is run thru a switch and a constant ground you should be able to bypass the speed/rear - input....similar to when you wanna watch a DVD on an aftermarket HU but you have to bypass the speed circuit.....

Normally to display the backup cam, the truck is in reverse, right? So there is a switch on the shifter or trans sends a signal on the bus telling the attached modules it is in reverse. If a switch then look on the wiring diagram and go from there. If a message then you'll have to find out how to send that message or trick the head unit into thinking the truck is in reverse. In my stone age truck, my camera is on all the time. I have an aftermarket head unit and can display it any time. I also have a front cam which is great for parking.

hmm, well
pin 1 fuse #113 ( 12v )
pin 2 - CTRL MOD - rear park assist camera LIN BUS
pins 3/4 go to the APIM ( see pg 4 here: http://revbase.com/BBBMotor/Wd/DownloadPdf?id=1123918 )
pin 5 - sheild - not sure exactaly what this does ( see pg 4 as above )
pin 6 not used

so pin 2 should somehow be the culprit/key right? so he should start by extracting the terminal and grounding it to test?

You over estimate my confidence and abilities!

I will keep poking around and see what I can do. If I can make it work I'll be sure to let you all know.

In the meantime, if some enterprising member figures this out or has already, please chime in!

Thanks Folks!

The camera connector
Took one for the team and broke a clip off trying to open the connector to test
This is why he connector broke I had the truck backed up and close as possible to the garage door so I could work and be dryish
The retainer has this long support on it
Pin 1 in every shifter position
Pin 2 in every position except R
Pin 2 In R
Pin 5 every shifter pos
Shifter in R camera unplugged

all this leads me to believe what we're looking for must be in the BCM or ACM

Don't know if this might throw some light on the issue. I don;t know if the power return is through video-, or shield. Pins 3&4 should give NTSC video.
