2015 36,850 miles and dies on highway
Driving in OK to home (Texas) yesterday afternoon -- after some traffic cleared going 60, hit the gas to pass someone. Car just loses all will to drive (electric still works). Had to coast to side of highway. Electric still works, car still starts, but put it in drive and nothing happens, nothing happens in R as well. The only think I can notice is when in D, it will say it is in "1" then "2" then "5" then the wrench appears and says "see manual"
Other info - never had any issues before with truck. Just had oil changed in Wichita on same trip (drove from Wichita to KC to OK where it died). Put gas in KS, so 200 miles on a fresh tank of gas. No smoking from engine, No fluids leaking from under while stopped/waiting for tow truck.
Its at the dealership and I am semi-panicking because the service guy said it may not be the powertrain (which is covered up to 50K miles) and need to be covered by my wallet. I took it to the dealership just because I was certain it had to be something covered by the powertrain, since it doesnt "go" but still starts, all electric works, etc.
Anyone have any similar experience, and how likely am I going to get all this covered via powertrain, vs. my wallet? 2015 F150 V6 not ecoboost Lariat XLT

Does the engine rev up when you are in park and hit the gas? If it does, then it sure sounds like the powertrain to me. I mean, seems like something is broken between the engine, trans and rear end.

Does not move when put into gear yet stays running?
Problem came on suddenly?
Sounds like a possible transmission or torque converter issue.
It may not necessarily be a big issue, it could be a sensor..

To answer the replies (THANKS!!!!)
It does start.
It does run idle just fine
It does nothing in D / R -- I rev gas any nothing happens -- lots of noise but no movement.
It came on suddenly as I hit the gas to accelerate to pass -- had to coast to a stop

I'm thinking transmission issue. Whether sensor or lost gears. The way it goes 1, 2, then jumps to 5... What kind of noise is it making? Engine noise? Whining/grinding? Definitely thinking you lost some gears.

You have a trans issue, these transmissions, default to 5th gear when there is a trans fault. But it will still move, since yours does not move, sound like the torque converter let go, or transmission pump.
