2015 20" Chrome PVD or 20" Platinum Aluminum Whhel?
Hi all,
Looking for some advice or opinions.
I am purchasing a certified pre-owned 2015 Lariat. One of the things that initially drew me to this truck was the chrome wheels on the dealer website.
during the certification process I guess they came across major peeling and cracking of the wheels(similar to what there are many threads on site describe).
They replaced with the Aluminum alloys that you see on the Platinum trim level. I voiced my displeasure with the salesman as they don't quite look as sharp. The Lariat is blue jeans metallic w 2 tone paint and the chrome bumper , mirrors, and door handles.
Service manager called me back last night stating he would put on the 20" chrome "like" pvd wheels if I'd like but didn't advise it. He stated that in climates with a lot of snow/salt etc (i live in New England) have major peeling/ pitting of the wheels within 2-3 years. He said he has personally had at least 10-15 customers at his dealership alone complain. Ford is aware but has not issued recall. Says the aluminum alloys are better and and still an upgrade for my truck.
I am torn but have until later today to decide as the truck is going in to finish some work today before I pick up Friday. Any thoughts or opinions?
How common is this problem and is the service manager correct on his assessment of the pvd chrome wheels?
Thank you

You could take the Platinum wheels and sell them after finding some you really like. I know people that would love to buy Platinum wheels. My Son thought about getting them fro his 2004 fx4

I was was trying to avoid this as then I’d have to front $1000 until the wheels got sold.
Thanks for the response

Boy - this is a tough one....
I recently bought a 2015 Lairat with the chrome package which has the chrome-like PVD wheels. I feel the chrome wheels really compliment the truck. But even being in an area with 5 months of salt/sand on the roads these wheels look pretty good yet. When I got it home I hand buffed them and they just gleem now.
I would have had them change the wheels out if they were damaged like yours. While those platmumim wheels are nice I just don’t feel they fit the truck.
Can you take the truck as is and have them order you in a set of new chrome wheels? Other than that I don’t know what I would do with with the only 2 choices you talked of.

i will say, the platty wheels look better on that truck than they do a platinum, but id still prefer the chrome.

Imho pvd sucks, mine ended up peeling under warranty of course, they looked new still from 15 but around the edges were just starting to peel. I didn't give ford a chance to decide on the warranty and just traded the whole truck in and mad sure to not het pvd wheels....never again. Look around and u will find lots of ppl with pvd issues on here.

Mine look like milk pvd. Right from day one. Only look good from 10ft. Hugely disappointed to the point of considering having the actually chrome plated.
