I agree that harsh downshifts have been reported with the F-150 and I am sorry you have one. But mine shifts very smoothly and while it won't kick down quite quick enough, I can use the select shift to take care of that by keeping out of 5th or 6th gear if needed. Also, you can use tow haul mode for more performance which I am sure you know. Lastly, I believe you can get an electronic tuner to change shift points but I may be wrong on that.

More gears doesn't mean more shifting and constant gear hunting. My wife for example, has a 2012 MB E-350 with a 7 speed, first gear is only used when in sport mode so it's always technically starting of in second gear around town which is nice and smooth.
Conversely, I just drove the new 2015 Chrysler 200 (rental car) for a while with the 8 speed and it never felt like it had too many gears. Actually, I personally think it felt like a conventional 5 or 6 speed auto. The rest of the car and everything about it was a complete POS in/out but the tranny wasn't in the area of things to complain about.

Either way, Ford is deciding to go with more gears and they have yet to disappoint with any of their trucks when something all new is introduced.

I have a friend with an 8spd ram. He has had no issuse and it is very nice. It doesnt shift all the time.
I just think 40mph in 1st and 60 in 2nd seems to long. Just my opinion.
