1st oil change on 2.7L - Dealer necessary?

Hey all -
On the 2.7L, do you think I can avoid the dealer for an oil change and going to a Jiffy Lube type location? Hate going to dealerships for a variety of reasons but wasn't sure given the issues with overfilling and the recommended engine cooldowns.
Sorry in advance if my dumb question offends anyone!

If you choose a Jiffy Lube type place, make sure they know what they're doing when it comes to a 2.7EB. Ford suggests 15 minutes with the engine off before you even check your oil. With my truck, I believe the time required for the oil to drain down into the pan is more like 15 to 30 minutes. That means that for a Jiffy Lube type place to correctly change your oil they'll need to let the oil drain somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes just to get all the old oil out. I'd go at least 30 minutes personally. That means letting your truck plug up their service bay for approx the time it takes for them to change the oil on 3-4 standard vehicles.

I asked dealer if they were willing to let the oil drain for fifteen minutes. Service manager said, "Why would they want to do that?" I pointed out that the 2.7 needed that time to totally drain and mentioned there was a TSB regarding the subject. He was unaware of it, but took my phone number. Got a call on my way home, the service manager thanked me for making him aware of the situation. He stated that they would probably not want to let a vehicle sit in their stall for fifteen minutes while the oil drains. Then stated Ford requires 5 minutes for engine to drain, as filter and filler cap have been removed, allowing oil to properly drain more freely.
I used to change my own oil, and after reading, on this forum, about how easy the 2.7 is to change, I ordered filters, drain pan, socket for filter. I have done it twice since purchasing my truck, and it is indeed the easiest change I've ever done. I did monitor the oil draining out and I can tell you, I don't think five minutes is anywhere near enough and fifteen minutes is questionable. I noticed a very thin, but steady, stream for more than fifteen minutes.
For those not sure about changing their own oil, there are some good videos on YouTube describing the process.

Did my first oil change several weeks ago and it's very easy. I waited 30 minutes after loosening the filter cap to allow all the oil to drain down into the sump. After draining the oil and filling with 6 qts of new oil it's right on the top hash marks of the dip stick after leveling the vehicle.

Um, there's a decent sized sticker right next to the oil dipstick that flat out tells you to shut off the engine, wait 15 mins, then check or add oil. It even goes to the trouble to have colored pictures and bright colors so you can't miss it. Ford wants you to know the procedure. They placed the sticker in a spot that you can't miss it.

I'm at nearly 30k miles now and my truck has yet to go back to the dealer for an oil change. I buy the Motorcraft filters on Amazon and get Mobil1 5w30 oil from Costco.

I have the drain pan - and all that - and I'm also afraid the dealer wouldn't do the process correctly. I'm tempted to do it myself. Plus I can make sure they're not dumping the oil in from some container with sediment in it...can dump in right in from fresh containers.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet...if I do get it done at the dealership, I will watch.

For the drain pan I would recommend a bucket. Once the plug is removed the oil comes out FAST!!

I do my on on both of our trucks. Usually let them sit in the garage overnight and do it first thing in the morning. Since it sits overnight, the drain, filter change, and refill is about a 15 min process. The 2.7 requires minimal tools. I think a 10mm to remove the cover underneath and a 27mm for the filter.
