Well...the 93 octane did it. Once all of the remaining 87 burned off, no knock whatsoever. I feel pretty stupid that the fix was that simple, but like you guys said, we shouldn’t HAVE to run the proxy stuff to keep our trucks from imploding.

On the previous Gen Coyotes didn't have to worry about it, but after 18 with the changes Ford made and the high compression ratio its really needed, very noticeable in hilly areas or even flat but hot/humid like here. Neighbors Denali is the same, running 87 on the 6.2 will ping and ding non stop.

Other neighbor has a new Limited Ram and samething, think Chrysler recs 89 (Ford manual says 91 for us), but neighbor runs premium anyway as towing race trailer on 87 was ping and knock city.

These engines today as a whole (all vehicles and makes) are pretty advance and complicated today, their not old school Ford ohv 302s. Everyones trying to push out as much power as possible, boosted or not.

Just as a note, folks that run mid-grade are paying too much. Mid grade is 2/3 regular and 1/3 premium (93+87+87)/3=89 and most likely you are paint the price
in the middle of regular and premium. What I do is figure how much room is left (takes a few fills to get it down) then add half premium and half regular, I pay the
same as mid-grade but get an extra octane point (93+87)/2= 90. This is almost premium in many states when they have 91 as premium.

I default to using premium in everything I have, be it car, boat, motorbike, truck, mower, and more. It seems that everything prefers premium, especially my car and boat.

The tick in my engine literally stopped while I was putting ethanol free 93 octane in mine. If you have budget constraints just try 5 gallons when you get low on fuel to see. I hate to say this but if you are not willing to spend the extra cash on good fuel buy a chevy.


I got the same answer at least 5 times on this forum and still continued to read because all this information is extremely helpful. I was also on other web pages before this with the same answer. In the new world excess information is the advantage when smart helpful people don’t have to hear a modem use your fax line to login to AOL messenger. Boomers.

I have 19 5.0. I used 93 AND e85. I am a retired auto tech. I switched to 87 3 years ago. never had detonation or pinging. runs great. the reason is because of the direct injecton and computer. THINK... if you could run with NO fuel. you would get NO pinging. What happens is knock sensor hears pinging, tells the computer and the computer sends fuel after top dead center into the cylinder. No pre ignition because it happens after pre ignition area.

Interesting, I have a Gen 2, 2016 5.0, sounds exactly like that but to a lesser extent. I tried 93 Octane and fuel conditioner for a bit with no success. Figure it's timing related so at 194,000km I'm going to change VCT solenoids and see if that does the trick.

Oz tune, does it in 2nd and 3rd gear, 12-1800rpm but only on a slight incline with light throttle. Sport more, tow haul and normal all the same.
