SSM 47515 - 2017-2018 F-150, 2018 Expedition/Navigator, 2018-2019 Mustang – 10R80 - Whine Noise

Some 2017-2018 F-150, 2018 Expedition/Navigator, 2018-2019 Mustang vehicles equipped with a 10R80 transmission may exhibit a whine noise. This may occur at idle and while driving coming from the bell housing and front pan area of the transmission. The whine noise may become louder when at operating temperature and increases with higher engine RPM in the Park position. A small amount of whine noise is considered to be characteristic of the 10R80 transmission due to the offsetgear drivetrain in the front support and has no effect on durability.

APPLICABLE VEHICLES
2018 TRUCK: B8 U553N EXPEDITION
2018 - 2019 CAR: ZG S550N MUSTANG
2018 TRUCK: B9 U554N NAVIGATOR
2017 - 2018 TRUCK: FC P552N F-150

The noise on mine is definitely from the trans area, so this above statement from Ford and my warranty eases my worries. Still annoying, but might go aftermarket exhaust anyway.

When i first got the spacer, i installed it per the instructions with the sharp ridges facing toward the intake and it made the same whistle but much louder. Something kept telling me to flip it around and try it before throwing 150.00 in the trash. I did and the noise is completely gone. Mine has been on for about 1500 miles. I wish i would have taken a before and after video of the sound to post. That dang sound drove me nuts! I wish someone else would try it. Would just like to confirm it was not a fluke on mine. If anyone else needs info on how i installed mine or pictures i would be happy to help.
Is this the spacer that worked on yours? https://www.airaid.com/search/product.aspx?prod=450-638

Yep that’s it. When installing it make sure to turn it opposite from what the directions say.

Interesting...I was reading the instructions on air raid and at the bottom it says "The sound of power...The “whistle” means its working!" I noticed they say the TB 'spins' the air coming in to increase velocity. So that must be why your whistle got louder when you installed it correctly the first time. Perhaps it makes it's own 'whistle'? So, if it's installed backwards, I wonder if it restricts the airflow somehow, causing a LOSS of airflow and power?

If you install it per the directions the whistle will get louder! Turning it around disrupts the airflow enough to stop the whistle. Or at least that’s my thought. I have noticed zero change in power or economy by turning it around other than my whistle is gone! For me it was well worth the money. That damn sound drove me nuts.

my truck is a 2018, 5.0 and I just replaced my muffler with a 18" magnaflow. I notice on wot or when accelerating while in drive at about 3600rpm my truck starts to have a high pitch howl and increases from there to redline... i double checked everything, no leaks. But i did notice that while i shift to n and do a wot it does it for a quick faint sec but when i hold it at the rpms i hear it in drive its gone. Its got me beat, tomorow ill remove the tail pipe and will try a test run, because i did weld up a custom dual tip... but i cant make it replicate it unless the truck is in drive... I might be going back to the stock muffler. Ps..The transistions and joints on the insides of the exhaust pipes are all smooth so there is no out of place turbulance. Its too bad because it has a nice rumble now and not loud for cruising at any speed. I just have to feather the trottle and ease up and not go over 3000rpm or it sounds terrible.

Has anyone installed the Airaid TBS with an Airaid CAI on the 2018s? I put the CAI on when it was new and I was going to install the TBS to try and eliminate this whistle, but it doesn't look like there's enough room. The intake tube coming from the filter to the throttle body passes too close to the reservoir for the coolant.

Just found this thread, but my 2018 5.0 V8 F150 Lariat makes this same exact whining / turbo spooling sounding noise at exactly the same conditions as everyone has described in this huge thread. Lower RPM range in drive, not in neutral. I cannot hear it with the windows up. Noticed it a few days into owning this new truck. Noticed in a parking garage, so the truck sounds were reflected off the garage walls , etc. I also can hear it easily with the windows down whether I'm near a wall or not (sound reflection not needed to hear it clearly with windows down). I have not taken it into the dealership yet, as I'm basically waiting to see if anything in this thread solves it or identifies it definitively. It sounds like perhaps Ford has simply said it's normal and that no fix is needed. The sound annoys me and is disappointing for my first Ford product and my first truck. I hope Ford decides to do something about this.

Is your issue the whine/squeal at low speed gear shifts, or the constant whine in Park and low speeds? Ford issued a SSM for the whine in Park, saying that it's normal (offset/gear driven variable vane pump)... If the low speed gear change, I would recommend going to the dealer to complain, because it doesn't look like Ford will do something about it until enough people complain about it, at least that's what a Ford service mgr told me. The squeal at low speed gear shifts seems to be an issue on the 5.0 only... Mine seems to be getting worse.
