Default Just a scratch? Clearcoat or paint?

I have a couple new scratches on my truck and was curious how you can tell if its just a clear coat scratch or if I need to find a paint match somewhere.?

TIA

take a bottle of soapy water and a microfiber rag. Simply spray the solution over the scratch a couple of times. Wipe it with the microfiber, but don't rub till it is dry. If it disappears then it is most likely just the clear coat. If it doesn't then it is most probably down into the paint. Your bottle should be filled with water a a few squirts of regular car wash soap.

Great thanks will give that a shot, just reg dish soap will not work I suppose? the scratch is white so it was hard to tell. Did not realize the door and other panels are all fiberglass either.

Apologies, does not seem like metal, not sure what the actual material is. When tapping on it it sounds like plastic or fiberglass.

Your truck is aluminum.

Drag your fingernail in the scratch, if it catches, it needs paint, or touch up. If it doesn't, it can be buffed. If the scratch itself is white like you say, it's more than likely just in the clear coat.

Aluminum? Well I'll be, sounds plastic thanks for the tip, I
ll give that a shot as well.

Side note: Did discover the underside of my hood is aluminum since I cannot use my magnetic worklight any more. Would have been nice if they gave just a little spot of steel.

No. I do wish I was able to use my shop light. Previous truck it worked great to just stick to the underside of the hood.

You were unaware that the 2015 and up truck bodies are aluminum? What was your previous truck? F150 hoods have been aluminum since 97.

As to your pm, since you can't even catch you nail in the scratch, a simple compound on polish should be able to remove the scratches
