Default Engine swap ?? Powerstroke

I know it's been beat like a drum but.. I have a 99 F150 larait 5.4. engine went out.. I ran across a great deal on a 7.3 Powerstroke non-turbo.. I hear its a waste but I would love to do it.. I can get it for $550... I am just trying to find a reason to buy it.

Id pass. Way too much work for a sub par engine. If you were talking a newer turbo/intercooled 7.3 I could see the appeal....not so much on a non turbo.

You can put a turbo on aftermarket obviously.. I wish I had the skills my mechanic does. He put an aftermarket turbo on a 1990 f350 dually and made all these tweaks and got 27 mpg on trip. That's crazy. So that shouldn't be the only thing holdin you..

ALL power stroke engines are turbo, 1994½ was first year, anything older would be a regular 7.3 The bell housing bolt pattern is completely different and would not work anyway.

Turbo or not its going to cost ALOT of time and money to get it in, wired/plumbed, engine mounts, trans mount and crossmember, driveshaft length, the ps engines wiegh a buttload you would probably need stiffer front springs....on and on and on.

Cool idea in theory but not worthwhile imo to execute.

The engine you are referring to is the 7.3 IDI non-turbo(not a powerstroke), its a COMPLETELY different engine from the 1994 1/2-2003 7.3 Powerstroke DI turbodiesel. The only similarities are that they both run on diesel fuel, have the same displacement, and are found in a Ford chassis. Thats it.

Plus you would have to do some major front suspension mods to handle the weight of either motor. I think they weigh just shy of 1000lbs each. Also these engines are very large and would probably never fit.

You're better off replacing the 5.4. Just my .02

I wouldn't.

The diesel probably weighs twice as much as the 5.4, something the frame and suspension was not designed for. When it's all said and done you will likely spend twice as much as the truck is even worth doing it right.

Find you a 4bt cummins lol but yeah there would be so much time and money just to achieve a diesel swap. It would be pretty awesome though. We had a 1994 f250 with a turboed IDI and made it to 320k miles before the e4od crapped out so we sold it and it still ran good.
