Having trouble with the relationship of lifter noise and EGR. Lets start all over with the details. Something else could be causing your problem.

someone told me that if egr ports are clogged bad that it could be smothering power and making lifters rattle. engine has about 150000 miles on it and just had new plugs and fuel filter.

Sorry, don't understand the logic about that. An engine starts up with no oil pressure, common knowledge. If a lifter has drained oil from it because of valve spring pressure while engine is not running, it will make noise untill oil pressure is returned. This is life! Am not trying to argue, but EGR, Exhaust Gas Recirculation, has nothing to do with oil pressure or lifter noise. Would someone please help me out, I'm confused!

Yeah no oil pressure could cause lifter noise...I belive I would see if cleaning the egr ports would work, but I dont think it will cure anything as far as the noise is concerned. On a older car I had that burned oil pretty bad the way I would tell when it was running low was listen for that noise when I came to a stop sign, because it couldnt generate enough oil pressure from the low level.
