97 4.2L 2wd, wanna make it 4x4
Hey guys,
I have a 97 extended cab 4.2L 2wd. I wanna make it 4x4. I live in a rural area and will be doing alot of towing during the summer, and light plowing during the winter. Now I have the mechanical experience and ability to do the work.I just need some information.
Now I cant seem to find a 4.2L 4x4 in my area, but from what I have read they exist. so I am cutrious if anyone know or has parts to do this change? or if I find a 4.0L v6 4x4 ranger, would its drivetrain components work? Some modification I expect and can handle.
or am I better off taking the time and effort and swap to a v8 4x4?
any information would be helpful

I agree. It would be easier and cheaper. You would need a new tranny transfer case whole new front end new drive shaft new front hubs. New electronics to control the four wheel drive etc. Etc. Find a good 4x4 and put ur body on it or sell yours and buy a 4x4. what's your budget for getting a 4x4?

thanks guys, I had a feeling it would consist of an entire front end change. by what i have read and what you guys have answered, I am better off picking up one with 4x4 already. lol guess i better start saving some money

I bought my 4.2L 97 f150 with 4x4 and a rebuilt engine/new cooper ATR tires for 1300 bucks. It needed a front right hub, transmission dipstick tube, and rocker panels. Total cost after all of this was like 2500 bucks. A sweet deal if you ask me
good luck
