VCT issue???
I just purchased a 2010 f150 with 5.4. There is absolutely no phaser noise of any kind, completely quiet and noise free. But since purchase on Saturday afternoon, I have had 3 episodes of rough idle, and clatter when coming to a stop. quick blip of the throttle stops the nose and miss. Sounds to me like a VCT issue as there is absolutely no phaser noise, question is, can a VCT solenoid issue be intermittent?? or would it be consistent with a bad VCT? Truck has 217k on it, no idea what maintenance record is on it, but would assume that it has had phaser/timing work previously as it is as smooth and noise free as can be.

I'm really not sure but because of one video -I can suggest it's oil pressure related. Perhaps once the oil is warm and thin.
Check out the YouTube video FordTeckMakuloco. He posted a video a few days ago about timing (he does many many timing job/videos). During the video he shows how timing is floating more as the oil warms up.

I just bought 7 quarts of 0W40, will dump whats in it and go to this and see if that helps, I dont have an issue with pulling the covers and replacing the VCT's if it has to be done though. Thanks for your input ingot.
Well, it seemed to help, but under load it continued to have trouble. local dealer I bought it from said, get that oil out and get 5/30 into it,. It needs 5/30 due to narrow oil passages and thicker oil will help pressure, but won't get through those passages so it's not a fix and is potentially disastrous for it.
