I dont know About on the 5.0 but on mine (4.9 I6) its screwed in right on the T-stat housing.. where the coolant comes out of the block..

Also If your T-stat stuck open and coolant constantly flows it wouldnt get hot enough to register on the gauge.. Atleast it didnt when i didnt have one in my truck so i figure having one stuck open and not having one at all should be about the same

from standing at the grill looking in. the sencer behind and a little to the right of the distributor is to the indash temp gauge. the sencer infront of and to the left of the distributor is the temp gauge to the computer.

there are 2 temp sensors....

the 1-wire temp sensor is the gauge....

the 2-wire temp sensor is NOT the gauge...

the 1 wire temp sensor for the gauge on a 4.9L 300-I6 is in the rear of the head right below the exhaust manifold..straight up from the starter....
