Default What is this thing???

Hey guys, I have a 96 4.9 and I know the engine bay inside and out but my friend's 89 4.9 has a few differences. Most of all, we have no idea what this thing is next to the coffee can. It seems to be stock, but also seems to have no purpose. It looks like an air pump like the smog pump but instead of it pumping into the exhaust, it just goes no where and is capped off. It also doesn't seem to get any voltage at the connector. I have access to a ton of service manuals but no tips.

It's an anti-vapor-lock cooling fan. Ford used them on the early fuel injected 300a

Ohhhhh that makes sense. Well now I know. I wonder how ford ended up solving the vaporlock problem.

They ended up increasing the fuel pressure of the system on trucks made after 1990. (Maybe when they switched to the in-tank high-pressure fuel pumps). This eliminated the vapor lock when the truck sits hot. So they stopped using it. I definitely have never seen one in person. My 96 4.9 doesn't have one, and I never have vapor lock issues.
