Changed the tranny and transfer case fluid with mobil 1 synthetic ATF. I had done a change on both about 10,000 (over 2 years ago) miles ago with regular cheap stuff, and it was so dirty that I thought it might be a good idea to change it again soon, because there was probably so much gunk left that I couldn't get to. I was right. The plug was pretty covered with metal shavings, even more than last time. Hopefully it is just "cleaned out" and not a sign of bad things to come.

I put the skidplate back on, and took a look at the ABS sensor wiring. I was hoping to find it chafing somewhere between the axle & frame, but it's not. Now I have to actually do some work to find out why the PSOM is intermittent & inaccurate. I'm afraid it's going to be the R&P/diff shedding metal again...

Finally, finally got my 4.10 gears put in the rear, along with new bearings, seals, pinion yoke, and I even found a killer deal on chromoly axle shafts so why the heck not amirite?
The awesome - acceleration!
The good - more acceleration!
The bad - Well, not super stoked about having 2500-ish rpms at 70mph, but I knew that going in. Maybe I need bigger tires
The horrible - Maybe the gas mileage (TBD), but definitely the cost. $125 for the rebuild kit, $100 for the clutch packs, $100 for the spider gears, $170 for the R/P, $150 for the axle shafts, $50 for the pinion yoke, $30 for the axle bearings and seals. But since I bought them over a 6-ish month period it wasn't too bad.
We knocked the whole thing out in about 4 hours. I paid a knowledgeable buddy $300 to do most of the work. Most of the shops in town wanted at least $600, some closer to $800, and claimed it was a minimum 7 hour job.
Ha.

But in general: gears don't have much real effect on MPG. It's the same engine pushing the same weight & drag around - just at a slightly different RPM. As the engine spins faster to push that weight, it's doing less work with each piston, which means each one burns less gas more times. So it nearly balances out. People who THINK gears make a big difference didn't recalibrate their speedos.

If you reverse the effects of the gears by installing bigger tires, you'll lose the acceleration/torque, and go back to exactly what you had before, with slightly more ground clearance.Until you re-calibrate the speedo, you won't get accurate miles on the odometer to calculate the actual MPG. Fortunately for you & all other '92-96 F-series/Broncos, it only takes a jumper wire & a few seconds:

Right, but the tires on the truck were not installed at the factory. Find their RevsPerMile, calculate the conversion constant, and check the PSOM. It's almost certainly off, which will throw off your MPG calculations.
