Purge solonoid? Never heard of it... Well now I do. What is it used for?

It's used to pull a vacuum on the fuel tank into a charcoal canister to ensure it remains a fuel vapor, from there is introduced into the intake manifold to burn the fuel vapors. This system is the reason why you should here air rushing in when removing the fuel cap to re-fuel.

Were can I buy a new one? I broke the connections on it when changing the rotten hoses last week.

there is one at rockauto. If you're interested; click the link, click "continue shopping" at the top right then click "search" on the next screen. The part should come up and you should be able to buy it from there. Had to do a workaround as rockauto likes using html frames, making the url never change to make things difficult to share.
