Try pulling the codes manually, if you can't do it manually then you have an issue with the computer. I personally don't trust code readers for OBDI, just my experience that some of them aren't very accurate for some reason or another.

The CEL light will stay on if there is a current issue. When testing, it should blink using the wire/paperclip method in order to retrieve codes. I bought the code reader also and it wouldn't give me any codes at all causing me to replace the ECC. Bought it, swapped it out and that took care of THIS issue. Runs like a top for now.
