Default Trying to help a friend

Hey guys, I'm just here trying to help a friend out with his older F150. He says it's been throwing the CEL for a while now and a few days ago when he started it it was high idling and he put it in drive--it was idling going somewhere around 10mph.. Anyone have any easy things to try doing before we start digging into what it could be?

you can pull the codes yourself too, just google search how, or search the forum, its been on here plenty. Also, even if the light isnt off, the code is probably still there. Your computer stores recent codes

Check for broke vacuum lines, that will increase idle, the code might be something else related.

Alright, his dad put the truck in the shop so we couldn't pull the codes just yet but it was working fine for today until around 30 minutes ago when he was bringing me home from a football game.. He started it, we got out of another friend's driveway and off of that street and as soon as we hit around 30 it started a buzzing(forgive my stupid-sounding explanations of things occuring in this truck, I'm not used to working on it) supposedly from the ECU. Supposedly what was replaced was the tumbler and the key, because it was damaged when someone tried to steal the truck and also a starting sensor or something.. I don't even know if he knows what was replaced.. I told him it could be the TPS or a vacuum leak but until we pull the codes we won't really know. Anyone know how we can pull the codes easily and cheaply or even freely?

Neither will read OBDI codes, only OBDII '96-up.
