Default trany question

i've always wondered if i could take a two wheel drive trany remove the rear drive shaft hook up plate(the piece that sticks out of the rear of the trany thats bolted on, that hooks the drive shaft to the trany, on a 2 wheel drive) and swap the 4x4's rear plate that alows you to hook the transfer to the trany and then have a 2 wheel drive trany made into a 4x4 trany. i'm hoping it will work. if it can i will be able to take a built 2wheel trany and put it on my truck thats a 4x4. please help.

I know they look close, but I'm pretty sure the tailshaft is shorter on 4x4s. I know they are shorter for Chevies but never actually checked for the Ford.
