Default Transmission type E???

Does anyone have the definitive site to find out what transmission I have on my 94 F150?
The sticker on the door says Type E but I guess I don't know it it was ever replaced. All I see on the pan is the word METRIC.
Help?

An E40D had a pan with 20 bolts. An 4R70W has 14 bolts and began in F150's in 1993.

I removed the pan, replaced the filter and gasket and need to put it back. Is there a proper way to refill the fluid? I saw one video say the truck had to be idling and warm to check the fluid level.
Is that right?

That's to CHECK - not to fill. I prefer to use a narrow funnel that seals tightly into the dipstick tube so that, when it overfills, it doesn't leak fluid out. At that point, start the engine for a moment, just so the level in the tube drops, and shut it off. Keep doing that until it's ~1qt. shy of the spec, and then follow the instructions printed on the dipstick.

I recommend ONLY MotorCraft Mercon ATF - no other brand.

I would bet your owners manual will state you have to warm the transmission up by driving atleast ten miles. I would measure the amount you drained out to get you in the ball park prior to checking level. With brake applied, engine idling, run though each gear selection momentarily and stopping back into park then check the fluid level. I have seen several transmission can be checked cold by running through the gear selections with the fluid level being at a much lower level on the dipstick. Warm check is best and your manual will state if you can check cold to get the fuid level close enough for a road test. Of course, do not overfill, that is just as bad as underfilling. ANY name brand MERCON V fluid ( which is backward compatible and replaces MERCON) will be acceptable since it would be a licensed product meeting Ford's specifications.Therwe is no reason to use Motorcraft fluid unless it is priced the same or lower than the name brands which isn't likely.

Not when the transmission is EMPTY, which is what he's asking about. And he can't drive the fluid in the bottles to warm it up, either.

No, other brands are NOT licensed by Ford. Ford only licenses the Ford & MotorCraft brand names. And even if they meet SOME specifications (read the fine print), other brands' fluids aren't the same as Ford/MC fluids.

Who says the tranny is empty???? If you look at post # 5, he did a pan drop and filter change. He never mentioned it was EMPTY.
. Open the PDF, it is stated that this product is "Certified and Approved by FORD" to use in their vehicles requiring Mercon and Mercon V. Motorcraft fluid is an option but not the only correct one.

So if you drove your truck until its tank was dry, would you NOT understand that the tank is EMPTY? Dropping the trans pan EMPTIES the transmission.

Which is not the same as "RECOMMENDED by Ford". Ford approves of you driving your truck where & how you want using whatever parts & fluids you choose to buy.

That depends on your definition of "correct", which appears to be different from mine & Ford's. I'll just keep using this:
