ive got a 1993 f150, xlt, 351 4x4. A vin decoder tells me my tranny is a "A", if that means automatic or stands for a model of tranny i dont know. Can anyone help?
You want the trans code off the sticker on your driver's door post. That will be what was originally installed.
After 21 years though you will want to verify that that's what is still in there. Crawl under and draw a picture of the shape of the pan and count the bolts that hold it on.
That'll be the only sure way to know what you've got.
I bought the truck from a good friend who was the second owner, his father the first. 120k miles and tranny has not been replaced. In the vin decoder it said tranny "a" . Does that stand for automatic or a model
The VIN does not tell anything about the transmission. The Vehicle Certification Label on the door pillar does. In the photo below disregard the red circle as it was used to show where paint codes are but you do see TRANS & AXLE shown there too.
E4od is basically a C6 with overdrive added (big and tough). The earlier ones (like yours unfortunately) did have a few issues which were corrected in the later ones.
But plenty of them worked fine as is so if it's working good still you're probably ok.
If you have problems you might want to research the upgrades.
Nope no problems keeping fingers crossed. Runs smooth, idles nice. Once I get it inspected and registered I'll be doing all new front end bushings. Just replaced wiper motor and window motor bushings today. I have to cut and polish the passenger side and hood tomorrow. It's actually pretty green again. I'm also going to be de chroming it
