Okay after I got my 1995 F150 running I attempted to put it in 4x4 got out locked in both hubs and pulled the 4x4 shifter. ( didn't know I had to push it in also. ) anyway I got it into 4hi and low then I put it back in 2hi and I put it in park and it made a grinding noise like a semi jake brake rhythm. Come to find out the linkage came off the 4x4 shifter and we got it back on and it now drives again but the 4x4 light is stuck on. It's a 5.8 with a manual transfer case.

You shouldn't have to push down to engage 4hi, it should just be a straight pull back from 2hi. 4lo requires pushing down on the shifter. Also with the manual locking hubs, engage them and then drive the truck in forward or reverse for a short distance so that the hubs actually lock in, and then engage 4 wheel drive.
