Default Transfer case assembly problems.

Ok.. well first off i have a 1995 f150 4x4 with a 408 stroker and the 4r70w and the borg warner 1356 t-case. I have been having transmission problems so i was pulling the trans and pulled the t-case and the fluid in the t-case was black.. so i took it apart and checked everything out and couldn't find anything.. so i proceeded to put the cover back on.. well when i put it back on and torque the bolts down i can't get the outer lock ring on. I dont know what happened or why so unless someone has an idea I'm just gonna take everything out and put it all back together. Thanks.

Questions:

(1) Are there any shims on the output shaft's bearing?
(2) Normally, you'll get a little end play on this output shaft --- can you pull it "forward" ?
(3) Did you disassemble the fork, oil pump controls, etc ? (Sometimes when you re-assemble things get out of alignment)
(4) That bearing on the output shaft can shift around --- did you notice any movement?
