Default trans and transfer case fluids

Just wondering if the transmission and transfer case share the same fluid supply? I have the 5speed manual trans and dont see a drain plug on the transfer case?
I removed both units yesterday and gear oil came out of both.

The transfer and tranny do not use the same sump. Each one has its own fluid and should be ATF not gear oil.

Should be two plugs on the back side of the transfer case. Should both take a 3/8" extension to remove them. The lower one is for draining while the upper is for filling. Hope that helps...

Edit: Added a pic, the red circles are the drain and fill plugs. Reckon mine has different plugs for some reason.

The owners manual for my 90 M5OD manual states that is takes automatic trans fluid... for what reason I have no idea... I always thought they took grease or something

They used to take axle grease but gears are smaller now. And automatic transmission fluid lubricates better because it gets in between those theeth better. My Honda calls for 5w-30 a lot of manufacuters are actually going to ATF and motor oil for transmissions. They have found that it works better with a lighter weight oil. Plus thats just how they engineer them now.

Default Transfer case no fluid?

Looking at buying a 2011 f150 5.0 4x4. Owner states the transfer case needs to be replaced due to no fluid? Does the transfer case share fluid with the transmission?
