Default trans fluid change

1987 f150 i6, 4sp OD trans. No drain plug. I took out the lower tail shaft bolt but it was a blind hole (no fluid drained) so how do you get it out?
plus I cant get the same answer twice on what fluid to use!
What you say?

I think I used ATF in my 87 4 speed. Never did more than top it off, & it has been a while. You can buy a cheap suction gun & assuming you can get the hose to the bottom, do a reasonable job of draining it.

Assuming we are both talking about a 4 speed manual with an overdrive 4th gear, I believe it to be a T170FT-RTS 'TOD" Tremec. I haven't found out a lot more yet. But, as you say conflicting advice on what to use. Some are saying 80-90 gear oil, some engine oil. I remember back in the '60s when they first started using ATF due to needle bearings in manual transmissions, with the added bonus of not having to row through heavy oil to shift. I would have thought by now all would be. The M5R2 5 speed in my 96 gets ACDelco Synchromesh Transmission Fluid. it calls for Mercon ATF

I have the same manual gearbox on my 87. I use a suction gun to remove, inserted in the fill hole. I use a trigger oil can to fill up.You will get about 2 quarts. Be careful on what oil you use since there are bronze or yellow parts inside. I used a 75w-90 (GL4) gear oil. Don't use ATF or a gear oil showing GL5 on it., ATF was never specified back then for that tranny. If you use a GL5 oil, the additives will over time attack the "yellow" parts inside. I believe back then, the C6 3spd auto was used so I assume your have a manual.

we often used pure mineral oil in the 4 speed boxes of the day. It was easier on parts in the winter, yet held up to the heat of the summer. Never saw a failure with it, even in racing and hard off road use.

Where do you buy that in quantity? I see it in the drugstore in the laxative section, in small bottles.

I take a small swig of mineral oil every 2 or 3 days to keep things smooth
