Regarding the pinion seal, I had a Ford mechanic totally mess up my once silent differential when he replaced the pinion seal on my mercury. Be real careful to mark the position of the huge pinion nut and torque it back to that same spot or you will have a whiney noise from the diff. Over do it and you have to tear the beast down and install a new colapsible spacer. Not fun.My truck dribbles a little from the pinion and I just keep an eye on it, it is nice and quiet and I want to keep it that way.

Thanks to all for the input!
I did some more research thru ford and "Chilton" and if I'm remembering my years correctly all 1987 thru 1993 4 sp manuals use 85w90, only the 5sp uses atf in those years.
anyway I pumped out the gear oil and it was gear oil in the trany used same pump to put gear oil back in. Worked very nice! took a test ride to stir things up and I must say I can tell the difference with the new gear oil. The old girl likes it.
Thanks all!
