Question Tranny issue.. of course..

aight, yes, i've searched. been searching this for quite sometime, part of how I found this site realy.

At anyrate, the E40D in my 91 is toast.
I've read all over the place that the newer models were gradualy upgraded over the rears.

What I cant find any diffinitive answer on so far is what year trannies can I use?

It seems to me that its about the 95 models that recieved about the final upgrades, but i've been lead to belive that they were used till about 97 or 98..??

so far as I know, they're all the same aside from a few slight updates with the intenals.. clutch pack sizes etc. I dont know about the electronics and such though or if there were any other subtle changes etc.

so essentialy what im asking, is, what is the newest year of E40D tranny that will be a direct swap into my truck?

its 5.0L, E40D, 4x4. (Xlt Lariat, 2 door.)

the newer I can put in, the better. newer better parts, better chance of finding one with lower miles already on it etc etc.

anyways, thanks for any help you guys can toss my way!

I don't now the exact year, but around '93-'95 they changed the external transmission plug. I hear you can swap yours in but I don't know how hard it is.

External plug.. like an electrical plug i would pressume?

thanks for the heads up, thats something I never came across, i'll be sure to look into that for sure!

No one else has any knowledge or thoughts on this?

I know where I can get about a 2000 or so model year, but I suspect drastic alterations by then...

I'll have to keep my eyes open for things comming into the shop to have a boo peak at and compare...

The main transmission electrical plug for the internal solenoids. They used this transmission up to '96 for the F150. I don't know the year they stopped using it in the F250-350 but the next body style doesn't use it.

They used it untill 02 for the 250's and 350s if I remember correctly. In the later models they were called a 4R100, but they used the same case as the E4OD so they should be interchangable as long as the plug is the same.

I noticed that in general the E40D and 4R100 were kinda loosely grouped togehter in most places/sites/information providers.

I never realy did quite grasp thier relation, but I figurd the 4r100 was basicaly an updated/next gen variation of the e40d.

so basicaly, I should be okay if I nab 95 e40d possibly a 96?

I'll have to have a look into the plug issue.. When I find some freetime at work, I'll compare plugs and wiring diagrams and see what I come up with. Maybe its a simple matter of switching the plug on one side or the other, maybe rewiring it. maybe not.

I have access to all-data at work, quite nice and handy and convenient.

I kow theres alot of things I dont know about these trucks, or tranies in general.

But the bright side is, I know enough to know when I need to know more, or something, or somethings missing, and I can realize when somethings not right or doesnt add up. And I know where to look and the right questions to ask. (or at least this is what I belive anyhow. lol)

There is no way they used that transmission until '02. It doesn't bolt up to the newer redesigned engines. I don't have any info on the 4R100, but I would assume it has a different case even if it's the same internally.

just for clarifycation, are you saying the e40d wasnt used all the way up to 2002, because they changed to newer redesigned engines(or something along that lines,) or are you saying they didnt use the 4r100 untill 2002..??

I know the the two trannies in question have a different pan..

sorry if Im confusing ya'll. If its any consolation, I think I just confused myself...

The E4OD was used up to '96, until they changed to different engines that have a different bellhosing bolt pattern.
