Default tranny help

ok as some of you may know. I blew my tranny awhile back. I got a replacement. and have it in. My dads friend thinks it has an aftermarket torque converter.
Anyways this past sunday i finished everythign up. Started it up. It had fluid in it previsouly. After 3 quart im out. But while filling it. You haft to have it warmed up at idle. In park. well smoke started coming out of the filler tube (this happened on my burned up tranny aswell) anyways. By the end of the day. the only way it will move is, reving up to 1500rpm then it will engage and go forward, then fall back out of gear, Then back in and your good to go. Yes i had to move it btw...

So any ideas?

Bummer - smoke is never a good sign and a tough way to wrap up a time-consuming project.

Other than any possible mechanical problems, your description sounds like there just isn't enough fluid.

Confused a little by your write-up about having fluid in it previously - just how much is in there? Is anything showing on the dipstick? IIRC, auto trannies are spec'd to take about 12-14 quarts to fill from bone-dry.

I would think it would be OK to fill it cold at least to the point of showing up on the stick before topping off by the recommended procedure.

I don't know that the cooler would play a large part since it appears the vehicle was never driven under load????

As I understand things, the tranny should be warmed up, and in Neutral, not Park after first shifting through all the gears when checking/filling.

Any chance fluid got where it shouldn't be and is just burning off?

if the tranny cooler is plugged it will heat up real hot real quick. and blowing it out with air is free. if it is the factory cooler I have heard of these clogging and causing all kinds of problems

It should not have taken very long at all for the excess fluid to burn off.
The same as when you spill oil on the header, it takes a few minutes at
most.
