I've heard that too. I've never been pulled over for it, but I have been rear ended. Having it on there can make the difference between couple grand in damage and nothing. Mine stays in.

Probably cause some people have been known to run them into their radiator while parallel parking. I think that only refers to the type that protrudes past the bumper face from a receiver. Mines recessed & mounted on a meaty bumper, but I much prefer the receiver type. Someone wants to rear end me, deal w/ it!

ive never heard of such a law but if there is im breaking it. my hitch has been in since last november and no cop has ever pulled me over for it. come to think of it the last time i was pulled over i was in my ranger and i always had my hitch in that. if it is a real law in michigan the cops must not care about it because ive never heard of anyone getting written up for it.

Sounds like a pretty ridiculous law.

I've looked around, on line and can't find anything clear about this. I have heard the same rumor, myself, yet have never seen a citation for it.

My guess is, someone banged their shin on one and decided it should be a law. Maybe they should pay attention!

Brothers best friend lives in Houston Texas, and owns a 4dr 4X4 (early 2000s) with a receiver hitch that hangs down low enough to pull with. One day in traffic a guy in a fairly new Nissan rear ended him and punched a hole through the radiator and into the engine block. It knocked the plastic deer head off the ball and scratched the paint on the hitch.

When the car owner got ballistic at my brother's friend for having "such a dangerous thing hanging from his truck", he told him where he could go, got back in the truck and got back in traffic...

sounds like it could be a law but isn't reinforced all that much, my hitch is never in, reason being is i've busted my shin on it one too many times
