Either your thermostat is stuck open, or you just don't have one. If your truck is running that cool, then I'd say it's running rich on fuel to.

Maybe the gauge isn't working right.

I talked to my ford mechanic friend, and he says that the temp gauges very rarely fail, and that I should probably replace my thermostat because its likely not operational.. running rich would explain some of my 10mpg dilemma too !

I get about 11.5 in winter with a good bit of stop and go and round 14 in summer, up to 18 on a road trip...

And I know mine isn't running rich so the above is probably average....

Checked for codes, none
10mpg is what i get in a good week, with 65/35 hw to city driving. But all less that 5-10 miles.. Suspicous that was the problem, i went on a 30 min drive and still barely off cold

He's right, the gauges don't, but the Coolant temp senders they're connected to do! On the thermostat, 180F seems to work the best in my truck. Actually, I've not experimented w/ a 160F, but I never recommend anything I haven't already done w/ good results, on my own truck. As "JCMS" said: Error code scan! The ECT sensor will tell you if it's not getting Closed loop temp or it has a problem itself.

Gonna run codes again tomorrow after I run around for a bit.
Now that it's cold my temp gauge is beyond cold
It does move sparingly, although it never gets past the C..
Don't think it's the sender unit, but I am going to run codes either way..
