Default testing fuel pump before install

Hello. I want to test the new fuel pump. I did it once, but want to check if I did it right.
Before, I used some house electric wires to pos. and neg. battery terminals and touched them to the motor's red and black wires. Test was about 2-3 seconds just to see it pumping gas.
Should I ground the motor wire to the frame and check? Which is safer?
Thank you in advance.

Default testing

One more question. Factory pump has crimp connection between the fuel pump and the hanger and the wire is hanging in the gas. So I just did the same. The connection is not water tight. Is this because 12v is not enough to cause arc or short?

It's not a good idea to bench test a fuel pump dry even only for a few seconds it will shorten their lives or even burn them up.

Yea I did the same on my Haber pump and the external pump. As king as they are pumping you are good to go.
