Default Swap E4OD for manual?

Hey everybody,

I just joined and I'm really needin some advice or to be pointed to a thread that has covered this already. I have an '91 XLT Lariat that has just gone through its second E4OD. I think I burnt it up drivin it around Knoxville with the default overdrive on all the time. It started slippin, then just gave out on me (no gears). I can have it overhauled by a place I've been referred to for 1400 bucks and a years warranty, but I hate having other people work on my truck and I really don't want to buy a new one. I also can only hope that an overhaul will actually work and that they don't pull it only to tell me it's gonna need something more extensive.

I'm really not up for dealing with E4OD internals, but my buddies and I are capable of just swapping it. I've always played with the idea of converting it to a manual, but most people would probably say get another truck. But I love this truck too much. My question- What would be the best transmission to swap? I've been seeing a lot about a Mazda 5 speed. I'm a college student, but also work in roofing contracting. Is there a gearing ratio that would be an ok medium for gas milage, but not totally cut off the trucks manhood? I don't haul anything heavy, but it does get a work out sometimes.

If anyone could give me some ideas on a transmission to go with, if any are pretty commonly found, what to expect other than linkage, clutch pedal, hole in the floor... simple things, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks guys

Mine too. Somedays I feel like hauling *** off of the stop line and others I don't. The tranny just takes it and hasn't let me down.

I took out the automatic out of my 89' and installed a M50D.

I looked and asked around on these forums but never really got what I was asking so instead of being lazy and hoping someone else would tell me exactly what to do. I went to wrecker and looked a standard over REALLY careful!

I found out it would be cheaper to buy and 5 speed truck. in my case I also needed an automatic with a manual t-case.

So i went out and found a 90' 5 speed 4x4 for $500.00 nothing wrong mechanically just there was honestly no body left on truck.

So i pulled my 89' apart and this is was I ened up using

-Transmission (m50d)
-t-case
-M50D crossmember
-pedal set up out of manual
-master cylinder for clutch
-clutch
-ring gear
-drive shafts
-speedometer (cluster and cable) have fun!!!
-transmission floor hump
-computer
-all thhe linkages for t-case
-change your exhaust up

-slave cylinder (dont cheap out and put a new one in, and also clean dirt and grime out of quick connect end on slave. and push in on white coller this will save you LOTS of time!

obvisously I forgot a few things but best bet is if your going to do this swap buy a parts truck. in the end the swap probably costed me $1000-$1200 dollars including truck. I replaced alot of parts and pieces as well just so I knew what I had.

The only trouble Im having is I acciedntly ripped my grear shift boot and I cant find one anywhere!!! and Im sick of listening to the howel of my tires down the highway!

anywho if you got any questions give me a shout I`ll be glad to help you out the best I can
