steering column 1992
I have 1992 f150 and my mechanic says I need to replace the steering column. (the keys just turns and nothing happens) He pulled out the sliding switch that is in the column and I just use that to start the truck without the key. Do I really need a new column or can I just replace the key cylinder?
As most of you can tell. I know very little and could use some good advice. thanks!

There is an actuator rod connected by a couple moving parts When you turn the key to "RUN/START" everything: upper ignition actuator, rod, key cylinder/gear/lower actuator all rotate forward at the same time to trigger the igniton switch to start...once it breaks you can turn it to "RUN" but it won't trigger the igniton switch on the column...fuel pumps will come on along with lights, radio.....
A manual should show you how to replace it. PITA.
