Default Starter won't bolt up to tranny

I've got a 89 f150 with the i6. It has the Mazda 5speed. We'll the tranny went out so I got another one from the junk yard, it bolts to motor fine. But my starter won't bolt up correctly. The junk yard tranny came out of a 89 f250. Do I need a different starter or what. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes you'll need an 89 year starter... in the 90s they went to a Mini starter and the bolt pattern is different.

I honestly am not sure what motor was in front of it. It was already pulled when I picked it up. Would the bell housing possible be larger on the starter spot of it was a v8??

i'm not sure. i'd guess it had a 351 being it came from a 250 and the trans bolted right up to your 300. so maybe you need a starter for a 351??? hopefully someone who knows more can chime in because this is just a guess

No. My '87 starter bolts just fine to my '96 tranny.

You didn't happen to accidentally get a ZF did you? Only thing I can think of.

I don't think so they both looked the same and the tag on the side read the same numbers

I have a 89 300-6 out of a F350 and my 95 300-6...

89 took the BIG starter and the 95 took the mini... I pulled the starter on the 89 and it will NOT fit the 95 or vice versus

the F150, F250 and F350 both took the big starter....

starters will not interchange.... you may have gotten a trans sean some one else already swapped from a newer year?

the OP has an 89 though and the tranny he got came from an 89 so why wont his 89 starter bolt up?

All of my parts come from F150s. It's definitely a '92-'96 trans.
