Default Starter Problem

1995 4wd 5.8

Has not failed to start (yet) but I worry each time I go to start.

Part of the time the engine whirls and starts fine.

Other times the starter just quits turning. I turn the key off and hit it again and it turns and starts. A few times I just left the key turned to start and momentarily it began to turn again and with the engine starting.

Engine almost acts like a cylinder fired before TDC and just stopped there until the starter finally rolled it over more. I'm certain that's not what is happening, just trying to describe what happens.

Also could be described as a very low battery but not the case. Battery is up.

Checked battery ground and hot connection to starter. All tight.

So is this the way a starter gives signs it's going out and on it's last legs or is something else going on?

I just bought the truck 4k miles ago and it's been an issue since purchased.

Thanks, Harold

What do you mean by "battery is up?" Have you had it load tested or does it LOOK like it's good because of its voltage? I wonder if you have a loose / corroded connection somewhere, either on the battery or the starter, or if the starting solenoid is going.

By battery is "up", yes I mean charged based on voltage check. And the battery appears strong once the engine does begin turning. As mentioned, the first thing I checked was ground connection and hot connection to the started.

So if none of the above is the problem, are you saying this is a sign of the solenoid on the way out?

Well I think it's a start, solenoids are cheap... But I also think you need to get that battery load tested. You could have great voltage but not enough amperage.

I'll try a solenoid. Good idea. I've had three different batteries on it from other vehicles so I'm pretty sure it's not a battery problem.

My first car didn't have a solenoid. Just had to push a little harder on the start pedal. So going back in my memory it is sounding like starter contacts.

Thanks for the reply.

Check the starter wires for corrosion.
