x2 on the rod, start with the basics, check it for proper movement. Clean the connectors for you ignition coil, ignition control module, power train control module, TPS, EGR, and IAC with quick drying electronic clean, wouldn't hurt to do all the connectors that you can find either, 20+ years will build up some corrosion and that reduces the flow of electricity. Also clean the chassis grounds with sand paper/emery cloth (eyelets and frame) and a wire brush (bolt). If you still have issues test the ignition components to ensure proper voltage. Replacing parts isn't a bad thing but throwing parts at it to fix a problem usually ends up costing more than needed.

Another thing to check is the shifter. If it's loose and not all the way in park it won't start. Next time it happens pull the shifter up into park more and try. If it starts is either an old stretched cable or the MLPS.
The rod in the column moves the ignition (on - off) switch when you turn the key.
If the switch is not in the right position (via the rod moving it) you won't have power where you want it.
The switch is the big white thing with all the wires on it bolted to the bottom of the column.
You can unbolt it and move it by hand to test it if you think that is the problem
