I know when this happened with the older trucks, you pulled out the speedo cable, cleaned it and lubed it with graphite and fixed the problem. Honestly, I don't know if a 95 still has a cable otherwise, I would look at the speed sensor in the transmission.

There is no cable in '92-up trucks, and the ABS sensor isn't in the trans - it's in the rear diff. This caption explains how that speedo (PSOM) works:

(phone app link)

The links in that caption describe common problems & solutions.

Thanks for the correction, wasn't sure if it was in the diff.

Pretty sure this is plastic speedo gear at the end of the speedo cable where it feeds into the transmission. Either the plastic gear is stripped or gear is the trans is worn out. Correct me if i'm wrong. Or was this pre 92?

earlier in the thread it was pointed out that 92 and up PSOM trucks have no cable.

its possible the original poster has some debris on the sensor in the rear diff..kind of a long shot

PRE 92, Like my 91, have what some call Driven Gear in end of speedometer cable that goes into Tranny. I was told by Tranny shop to change speedometer cable since already replaced speedo gear/driven gear a few times over the last 7y.. That gear fits, circulates around What I think they call Driver gear, that is INSIDE tranny. A Job I'm not ready for
Those Gears, driver, driven, whatever it's called This Week, comes in differing colors based on how many Teeth are on each one. Best to mark with Perm. marker, count the gears b4 ordering unless you're into smacking your head against a wall... Will try to post a pic of either/or when track them down...

It should be an easy fix for your '91.. Your speedo cable needs lubrication. Slide under the dash, reach up and unscrew the cable from your speedometer head. You can then pull out the inside of the cable. Clean it with alcohol, let dry and then coat it with powered graphite and slde it back inside the cable sheath. There is a special lubricant for this purpose. I found graphite works best as it is not affected by temperature. Do not use plain old oil. You might have to do a little moving of the cable to engage the drive gear within the transmission. . Reattach the cable to the speedo head and you are done.
Ever think the reason you had to replace that drive gear so many times could have been a stiff speedometer cable. I never had a gear fail on me.
