I'm no expert but looking at the pictures probably had the backlash way too tight, almost forced the carrier and ring onto the pinion.

I have the idea of how they need to be set up. I've done it before at tech on a axle they have for that lesson. I had a shoddy mechanic do them for me and got f--ked. Few people told me pinon was set in too far. And by the looks of it he just put them in there and that's it

Yall have taken this way too far. Re read what I said, I was never meaning to offend anyone, no need to call me a dumbass. I never said autozone parts were ****, and that you should never use them. Quit putting words in my mouth.

Ummmm - yes you did!

"you can tell a lot about an old vehicle by the parts used. If all new parts are motorcraft, the owner obviously highly values his vehicle and takes great care of it. And if it's all autozone parts the owner is most likely ok with taking shortcuts and probably took shortcuts in repairs and vehicle maintenance as well."

I didn't put words in your mouth. I gave good examples of what some people will say about using off brand parts. Most all of us buy our trucks used. Off Brand parts may or may not be a bad sign in the used car market. The biggest sign is when previous owners put a rig up for sale with parts broken or in disrepair. I didn't call you a dumb ***. I was referring to the Hardcore folks who will let a vehicle sit because they won't touch a certain brand tool or a certain brand part. That is a sign of a dumb ***. A mechanic who makes his customer wait because he has to have a snap on 10mm socket to finish a job instead grabbing what he can to get them back on the road is a fine example of a POS. I have personally seen great mechanics sit in an office and twiddle their thumbs while a customer waits for their car to get fixed. Ask them why....I have to wait on the tool truck! Sorry to offend you and it wasn't aimed at offending you. As far as putting words in your mouth, read the quote. You said it, not me.

Here is my quote, "If you sit on the side of the road broke down because you despise autozone that much and would rather wait on the dealer or Higher Dollar Parts Store to open, then your pretty much a dumb ***!" As you see, I did not call you a dumb ***. If your gonna hang around this forum, some times you get more than you may expect when it comes to the way folks feel. Hopefully your feelings do not get hurt that easily. If your that guy...so be it. As myself and others have pointed out, we might love our Fords, but they too are parted out all over this world. No one knows where a particular part comes from anymore. A name brand is just that. Pay twice as much and get an Autozone part in a Motorcraft box.

Let me add......you can get some guarantees if you make the effort. I use an alternator shop where I at least know who built my alternator and on what day. I can go to the axle/drive shaft shop and get custom parts made and know exactly when and where they were built. Same for a motor shop and a body shop. Problem is, that's still no guarantee. The drive shaft shop gets their tubing from a flat bed 18 wheeler. The motor shop gets their pistons and bearings from one or more suppliers who got their metals or other supplies from someone else. Etc, Etc.

Get a bad casting, an impurity in the metal, a cold solder, a badly pressed part, and they can fail. You can run and scream at the guy that built whatever he built. Can you rightfully blame him or simply ask him to stand behind his warranty? One thing I'll give Autozone, they have stood behind all 50 alternators or power steering pumps or water pumps that i have returned. Same with Oreilly and Advanced Auto. You just never know.

TYC makes top notch alternators and starters at extremely competitive prices. You should look them up online and order their parts from Amazon or eBay.

My TYC starter on my truck is 100% brand new unit (I'm assuming they used a clean sheet approach to build it) and turns the engine over so fast it sounds as if it's a high torque starter, but it's their stock replacement. Their remans are top notch as well. Have yet to have a problem out of any part made by them.

Here's their online catalog: http://tyc.mycarparts.net/
