Smog pump locked up!
The smog pump on my grandad's 1991 F150 5.0 has locked up. It's the accessory on the sepentine belt directly below the alt.
I am wondering if we can just put on a smaller belt and let the smog pump sit there froze up. (Do you know the correct belt size for this app?
Or is it a better idea to replace the pump? Are they fixable? We sprayed wd40 inside of it, hoping it would unlock without taking it off the engine, but it is so frozen that a chain style vice grip (like a strap wrech) and alot of elbow grease won't move it.
Any suggestions?

The part is about 55 dollars for a rebuilt unit. the pump is part of the emission control system so it is illegal to remove it. Having said this if your state does not have a vehical emisson check like Wyoming who is ever going to know. What I don't know is how it's removal will effect your ECM. I personally would install another one, either a rebuilt part or a good working unit from a junk yard. It makes it so much easier to replace the belt you don't have to play games with belt length.
The ECM in that old of a truck will never know its gone. The engine will not have that power robbing pump on there, the truck will be 6 lbs lighter without it.. I took it off of every vehicle I woned that had them.
a Cool thing to do with these old smog pumps is to use them as superchargers for small gas engines. I remember a person who built a go-cart and attached a smog pump to it, for a one lung engine that thing screamed.
I agree with NGM I removed all of these things from my old cadillacs which had them. There was no worry about a belt because at the time only California cars had then so a replacement V belt was easy. I looked aroung and found this kit. http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....Z5Z5Z50000059b
it installs inplace of the smog pump using the factory mounts. I don't know how accurate the numbers are but the a smog pump takes any where from 2 to 7 hp depending on what forum you are reading.
This will also cost you a little in gas mileage...........I just heard a whole bunch of tool boxes opening
