89 f150, 4wd, 5.0 - when i turn engine off , I smell gas fumes seems to be more noticable passenger side of engine compartment. No sign of leaks anywhere. Maybe vapor canister? also what is the coffee can looking thing do?

Purge valve hooked up and working ?
Lines in and out of the charcoal canister in good condition ?
Coffee can is part of the vacuum system, not likely to have anything to do with the fuel smell.

Mine is located front right in the engine compartment below the battery, it should look like the drawing on the center right of this page from LMC listed as "Vapor canister-Gas engine"
http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/FD/full.aspx?Page=130

The "purge valve" is a temperature controlled ported vacuum switch on the engine. But it sounds like you might just have a vacuum line or tank line off on the canister.

Erfields545 has a pic posted in the pre 87 section.
Then the purge valve is usually in-line very close to the throttle body.

I think you had it right the first time. RF of the engine compartment below the battery.

all lines look to be in good shape . pulled the canister, it seemed to be blocked couldn't get any air to pass thru. I guess after 27 yrs. that happens. Anyway I put a new vapor canister on and will post in a couple of days to see if that solved my gas smell
