Default Side Gapping Spark Plugs

So I went by NAPA today to try and get some Copper Core Motorcraft plugs for my 93' to go along with the coil I just ordered. Well they don't carry Motorcraft but they did have Autolite's. He pulled up a picture on the computer and I noticed that this one, was already side gapped........

The were out of stock but they ordered them and will be there tomorrow. About $3 a piece but check it out, for an extra dollar, I'll hold off on whipping out the Dremel and messing with it. Plus these are pregapped at .054.......here is a picture from Advance's website.

Motorcraft makes them too if you can find them! Let us know how they do!

So do they meet your standards Ymeski? I asked the guy if they were copper and he couldn't tell and didn't have one in stock for me to look at. Advance doesn't specify either......I'm assuming they are, but then again you know what happens when one assumes.........

They appear to be a copper core Nic-plate. Good to go. I'm going to go see my bud down at the parts distributor and see about special ordering the Motorcraft version & ask him about the Autolites.

So, The Autolites your referring to is their equivilant to Motorcraft's "(T.B.A.)". He thinks the center electrode of the Motorcraft plug is slightly wider & has slightly less projection of the ground electrode, both are copper core & Nic Plated. He's not sure about the electrode width difference, as both special order & he has never had both there at the same time. The Motorcrafts are $4 ea.. I can't not order a set. Shipping from Cleavland, gonna take a week. I never recommend anything I haven't run, especially at $4 a pop. Let us know how the Autolites do! (He had the Autolites at his local warehouse, Implying they sell them more often)

I like the idea of having one already made as opposed to me cutting it and filing it. I think you said that if you weren't careful, any rough edges could get hot and give you unwanted detonation. At least all 8 will be uniform this way. I'm gonna try them out of the box (.054 GAP) with my new Accel coil and drive it a little before I mess with the timing. I'll try to do a MPG measure before and after and post the results. I expect you'll do the same with the Motorcrafts. Then if I'll try those wires you've been raving about and see if they make an improvement above and beyond the coil/plugs. Advance advertises them at $2.79 so I'm gonna make NAPA match the price.

Hopefully this will cure a subtle miss I've been noticing with the cheap Champions I put in last summer (didn't realize Champions sucked b/c I was/am a little green in the wrenchin' dept.)

Do you recommend putting anti-seize on the threads when you replace them? I got some dielectric grease to put on the plugs/boots/distributor cap so hopefully that helps prevent me from getting zaPPPEd.

Rotating the distributor CLOCKWISE, advances the timing correct? (93' 5.0)

Man, why'd you have to wait until the week after I changed my plugs to find this? I'll have to order up a set and see how they work.

I'd recommend at least checking the gap before you put the plugs in, could have closed a little bouncing around during shipping.

I'm fairly certain but, will double check, all Motorcraft spark plugs are made by Autolite, just like the Motorcraft oil filters are made by Purolator. They should be exactly the same. I'll ask my parts manager today and post the results.

Great find by the OP, I'll be getting a set myself.

Looks like Advance and NAPA actually have a good price on them compared to Summit where they are $5.95 each!

Ya, the one drawback to physically altering the stock plug, is you loose the Nic plate on the tip of the ground electrode. There is an anti-seize specifically designed for plugs that also helps maintain ground path. Same for the dialecteric, keeping the impulse from distraction by condensation. Those long fat silicone boots are also great for maintaining path & denying leakage. As I mentioned before, that impulse is looking for any port in the storm, a leaking wire, usually where it finds it. The theory is to provide the least amount of resistance & highest conductivity from the coil to the plug. This is where the 40ft, of conductor wire / ft at only 40 ohm resistance / ft. comes in w/ the MSD Superconductors. The impulse stays uninterrupted & your fingers stay on the end of your hands! (they actually never leave your hands, you just can't feel them for a while). If I remember correctly, counterclockwise is advance. I'll be watching MPG when I install the Motorcraft Sidegap (T.B.A.)'s but I'm already getting 17/23 in my 302 w/ the stock's I alter. I think the uninterrupted Nic plate will just prolong their life span. Although at 10K mi., my altered stocks are still going strong.
