shifter broken

Unhappy shifter broken

My 1996 F-150 has a broken shifter.Will not go into Park,just hangs down.Can get it into reverse,neutral and drive,but handle justs flops down. Has anyone dealt with this problem and knows what part I need to fix? Thanks

weird, i just got an 96 today and it has the same problem except mine doesnt flop down, i wish i could tell you what the problem was...

I don't know this for sure, but my common sense tells me that there's a cable linkage that shifts the gears, and the cable is just stretched out.

Mine's a stick so I don't know exactly what the linkage looks like but there should be a pivot on the column under the hood with a rod and brackets that attach to the frame and transmission.

my shifter became wobbly a few years ago but if you look up under the dash you can check the bolt that holds tension on the cable. mine was loose and when i tightened it up it was back to normal again. try checking that. just wiggle the shifter while looking under there and you will find it. its a bracket right next to the steering assembly.

My shifter quit all together today will not shift into any gear? I will take a better look and see if anything is loose. Thanks

my work explorer shift linkage has these problems all the time. if it stopped working completely, you probably broke the linkage totally.
