Default sending unit

my sending unit just went out on my front tank and the guage went way past full, do I have to change the fuel pump as well as the sending unit, or can I change them individually, my fuel pump still works, I have a 88 302 auto.

Sending unit is like $60 around here, or $100 for the fuel pump and all.

Just to be safe I would replace both, wouldn't want to have to take it apart again to fix.
