Default Rim spacing

I may be stupid for asking this, but is there a diference in in positive and negative wheel spacing? For instance I was suggested -4 inch spacing but I'm only finding positive wheel spacing online? I'm so confused. Please help!

it's usually referred to as backspacing. and I'm pretty sure that the number is the distance from the front/outside of the rim to the mounting part. negative backapacing is an offset wheel and postive is inset wheels, the more negative backspacing the more offset I believe . someone can correct me if I'm wrong

There is offset and backspacing. Offset is where the hub is positioned from the centerline of the wheel. Backspacing is the distance from the mounting surface to the inside lip of the wheel. Its similar to offset without actually measuring the offset.
