dont expect to throw tons of money at it and get 20 mpg. it just doesnt happen. you can fix all your problems and be lucky to get 14 mpg on the highway.

That doesn't sound right. EPA estimates it (by the new numbers) 14 in town 18 hwy. Thats a 5 speed super cab, short bed 2 wd, 3.55 rear axle. Something is way off to be getting these kind of numbers lemme re-define what I mean by 12 MPg, flat terrain, 5th gear, cruise set at 55 MPH. No stopping, all interstate. This isn't right. I have NEVER drivven a vehicle that I haven't gotten at LEAST 1 MPG better hwy. And usually city. I DONT think I am being unrealistic when I expect new sticker numbers. UNLESS I have 0 psi compression on all 8 cylinders. Just not right. Something is WRONG with the truck. Once it is fixed I will do thr timing bump to see what it bumps me up to but I gotta fix this thing first.

I wouldn't think simple ignition component upgrades & whatever is required to return it to a healthy, fully functional state, requires a throwing of tons of money.

That being said, you're not going to have the same outcome w/ an engine w/ a 100 psi compression average, as you would w/ an engine w/ a 180 psi average.

I seem to remember making sure the set bolt was loose enough to allow rotation but not jump out of position (requiring resetting at TDC #1 on compression stroke), locking Vice Grips around the shaft & tapping the pliers both directions w/ a small hammer.

Wait for more suggestions for this problem, as I was just at wits end, & didn't care if it meant replacing the distributor at that point. It work ok for me though.
