Replacing ignition in 1990 E150
I know it's not an F-150, but I'm assuming they have similar steering columns. I've done several ignition switch replacements in the course of my 72 years on the planet on a Ford truck. This one required removing the steering wheel to get at the detent. Not a problem I've done that many times in the past on various Ford's . However, for some reason, after I put the key in the run position and press the detent the ignition switch only comes out about a quarter of an inch and they're refuses to go any further. Wiggling and jiggling it gets me nowhere. I've noticed at the top of the steering wheel there is a pin that drops down in as soon as I put it in run position. I have not disconnected the battery and I'm wondering if that needs to be done in order for it to release the ignition switch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Your 1990 ignition switch is down the column about 1 foot away from the steering wheel
Actuated by a rod that moves via a switch actuator from the key and cylinder mechanism gears
So
You have an ignition switch and an ignition key and cylinder
The switch is the electrical portion, the key and cylinder along with the actuator and rod move the switch
The switch is fairly easy to replae
So is the key and cylinder

On those pre 1992 columns, once the steering wheel is off you need to remove the key in warning buzzer contact
Once that warning buzzer contact is out, the cylinder should come out the rest of the way
The stuck ones I just use a flat blade screwdriver to and pry them out
You are past the stuck ones part if it's a 1/4 inch out and the contact should be what's holding you up

That is just the 1 5/16 bolt head screw with the brass tab and wire on it
I couldn't find a picture of 1 of them to show you
but
If you look at a picture of a turn signal switch for your truck, you will see the warning buzzer contact as 1 single wire with a bolt hole
