Thought I'd take a couple of pics and post them while I was removing this dash in case anybody is trying to swap one and wants to see where they're going before they start. Cab is a 96 F150 but the basics should apply to most of the trucks in this category.
First off, this is what's behind your dash when it's removed. Those pieces will come out separately if you want to remove them.
This is the area behind the glove box. Note the attachment points marked with green tape. There are 11 in total if you do it the way I do.
This is the area behind the cluster. You can see the rest of the attachment points 11 in total. The rest is connectors, cables and vacuum lines. Assuming you've dropped the column and unbolted the e brake, you've got 4 bolts by the w/shield (just the ones closest to the w/shield that go towards the firewall), 3 across the bottom from the pass. door to the column area and the 4 big nuts that hold the aluminum block on. It can be done without removing the alum. block, but this is simpler.
That's all there is to it. You can then pull the whole dash away from the firewall a fair bit and unhook the wires and stuff that were hard to reach.
You'll want to pull your kick panels to unhook the connectors there, and of course drop your column, unbolt your e brake and unbolt the computer, transmission and fuel tank/ tailight wire harnesses from under the hood. Everything else gets pretty self explanatory.
Hope this helps somebody - I know it wasn't nearly as easy the first time I did it.
You just have to pull the instrument cluster to change bulbs.
But time wise, once the steering column and instrument cluster are out, it takes me 15 to 20 mins to pull the dash, but I've done it before. First time was about 2 hours because I was undoing a lot of things that didn't need to be
Thanks for bumping this, I was actually going to look up this thread in the morning because I forgot where the fasteners all were that had to come out and witch ones don't.
Well it looks like I am about to attempt this. Is there anyway to pull the dash without having to drop the column? It's a manual transmission with tilt wheel if that makes a difference.
