Default Rear Locker

Hey Everybody! Another new guy here.........Ive been reading the posts for while......learning a lot of good stuff. One of the posts mentioned lock right lockers. Got a few questions 1) Is this a brand or model? 2) Should I buy one in particular? 3) I Understand the obvious advantages.....any disadvantages associated with a rear locker? Should probably mention that i am only interested in a limited slip as the truck is driven on the road considerably. Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated!

Have you checked the axle code on your truck? It might have a traction-lock in it. This site will help you figure that out - the code will be on the differential tag, or on the sticker inside the driver's door frame.

You probably don't want a full locker if you spend most of your time on the road.

The "lunch box" lockers are generally very good. The Lock-rite is one of the better ones. I have used them in several FSJ's. They make some noise. the locker is easy to put in, and is a possitive lock, unlike limited slip. You will feel it some when it locks and unlocks going around turns, and hear it in the parking lot when turning. The good, they work, the bad, you can feel them slightly in the handling, and it will spin you out on slick roads easier, and wears tires in the back a little faster. The limited slips are generally WORTHLESS! When you need the traction of that second tire turning, it won't. the mechanism isn't tight enough to force power to the traction wheel. however, like the locker, it will spin you out easier. There is a locker called a "Soft Locker" that is suppose to be smoother than the
Lockrite, but I havn't used one.

i got a trac-loc rear end w/ carbon fiber clutches and i don't have any problems with it hooking up! (i don't go off road though) i think a locker would be pretty noisy for a daily driver

There is a lot of stuff out there to improve traction. Thing is what works for you and the driving you do. I drive on the road alot. but off road I'd like to be locked. SOOO. I'd like to be able to switch..down the road. I have Trac-loc like Dixie..haven't had the pleasure of slinging any mud yet..but works good in the snow. Buy a winch best money you can spend...just make sure it is big enough...9000 lbs minium for a F150.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'm leaning towards a limited slip, the lock rite sounds aggressive for my needs. Gonna look into that "Soft Locker".......gotta 4x4 shop down the road. Thought about the winch and probably would go with the receiver stlye so I could use on my other truck.......anybody have a bad experience with the receiver style??
