rear end issues
more issues with this demon truck.
new rear drums, rear drum hardware and shoes. (they arent adjusted and not fully engaging - ebrake doesnt work).
when driving there is an intermittent nasty rear end squeak or rhythmic vibration, some smell of burning and overall just seems bad.
there is quite a bit of play in the driveshaft going into the rear end, and a lot of oil directly above the driveshaft joint. is this normal or common, and could it be the cause of the issues?

definitely a problem...either the pinion bearing is trashed or is installed incorrectly. There should be no play there, and solid to and through the u-joint to the drive shaft. Get it resolved or it may fail in a very bad way.
i am handy but unexperienced at drivetrain stuff. can I do taht myself or is that best left to a mechanic?
can't see the back side of the pinion, is the rear end cover off and access to the internal gears available?
That is not normal, once the ring gear and pumpkin are out, usually you have to no-bounce hammer that pinion shaft to remove it. There is a bearing at the base of the pinion and once there at the drive shaft end. The pinion rides on those two bearings and should be tight, smooth and so on. The pinion shaft may actually be broken and the carrier is just "holding it together".
Next step would be to drain the rear, remove the cover and see if things are solid.

If you are not experienced in rear ends, I strongly suggest you have a tech look at it and repair it.. Many mechanics will not get into differentials because it is very easy to screw them up and end up with gear noise.. I believe you have atleast a bad pinion bearing and seal. With all the gear oil sprayed everywhere, it is likely to have been run low on lubricant too. The pinion nut sets the preload. If it is not set correctly, the rear end will be noisy and will eventually fail. This is not a component for the inexperienced.
It likely would be more cost effective to replace the whole rear end with a junkyard unit. That would be easier and cheaper to do.
