Default Rear end fluid?

Ok guys, just bought 95 f150 xl with 300 6 cylinder. 85000 original miles. Going through truck and changing all original fluids. Trying to figure out what to use for rear end fluid. Parts store told me i need to get ahold of dealership with vin # to figure out what type of rear end it is. Does anybody know what type of fluid i might need to use?

I just went through this too.

Do you have a manual for your truck? It will tell you what you want to use and how much. My manual referenced all F series, so I looked at the sticker on the inside of the drivers door on the cab. You will see an axle code. Mine was H9 which is a 3.55 LS. The manual stated 5.5 pints of 80W90.

Doing a search lists the 18 as a 3.08 non limited slip. Your manual should have a chart with that rear end listed hopefully.

If you use synthetic gear oil with a non limited slip, you shouldn't have to get friction modifier. I didn't use any with mine and it works well. With regular 80w-90 you may need it, but I doubt it in that instance as well because the formulation has greatly improved since the truck was built nearly 20 years ago.
